Obituary: Mrs. Mary Edith Cowell, 77, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Coonrod, in Saint Ansgar, Saterday evening. She was the widow of Charles B. Cowell, who preceded her in death in April, 1939, and who was formerly a resident of both Whitten and Eldora. Mrs. Cowell is survived by five sons and three daughter. They are: William of Eldora; Vern of Saint Ansgar; Ray of New Richland, Minn.; Edward and Homer of California, Mrs. Bessie Coonrod of Saint Ansgar and Mrs. Lewis Peterson of Anoka, Minn., Mrs. Leona Carson of Waterloo. There are also 34 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. Also one brother, Marvin Day, Whitten, and five sisters, Mrs. Margaret Nelson and Mrs. Edna Hauser, Eldora; Mrs. Ann Weaver, Marshalltown; Mrs. Ed Reese, New Providence; and Mrs. Hilda Roll of St. Ansgar. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Vilmont Longenecker funeral home, with Rev. Lloyd Hamilton of the Gospel tabernacle in charge. Burial was in the Eldora cemetery.

Daughter Leona wrote: My mother loved everyone, and treated everyone alike. She was forced to help raise several grandchildren when she was in her sixties. I quit school two months before I graduated from the 8th grade to help her care for these granchildren. She thought nothing of doing huge washings on the wash board. She loved to raise a nice garden and piece quilts. I have so many fond memories of my mother, this book would not hold them all.

During World War 1 she did lots of sewing for the servicemen.
